New Look Flames

Arguably the busiest team in the offseason , the Calgary Flames have - until recently - been in the headlines nearly everyday signing free agents or pulling the trigger on trades. Despite all of this movement, the number of new names of the Flames with be quite small though the team should perform much better than last season.The bulk of the additions: Stefan Kronwall, Anton Strahlman, Garth Murray, Riley Armstrong, Jason Jaffray, Keith Seabrook, Colin Stuart will be playing for the Flames new AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Heat. Obviously, Flames management wants to not just burn their way through the NHL but brand their mark into the AHL ranks as well. While the Flamin' C's had great offensive punch for most of last season thanks in large part to 39-goal man Mike Cammalleri - who's career best performance priced himself right out of Calgary - and to role players stepping up - Rene Bourque (21 goals), David Moss (20) and Todd Bertuzzi (15). GM Daryl Sutter had to let Cammalleri go becuase of cap issues (he's making $6-million a season in Montreal now) while letting go of the aging Bertuzzi, who had modest comeback season, to get younger and faster up front. Fredrik Sjostrom, Nigel Dawes, Brandon Prust and Brain McGratton are the only truly new NHL forwards the Flames have brought in. This raises the question, who will score the combined 54 goals between the departed Big Bert and Cammalleri? You can reasonably expect 15 by Dawes, and say, 10 by Sjostrom should they gel with their linemates and make the most of their ice time (Prust and McGratton's scoreboard contributions will be nominal), though that still leaves 25 goals on the table from this forward group. The defence has been completely overhauled by simply one addition - Jay Bouwmeester. Sutter netted the jewel of the 2009 free agent crop by trading for his rights before July 1 when the UFA derby begins. The method, which has had mixed results, worked out for the shrewd GM and he was rewarded with the big, strong skating Bouwmeester who's defensively responsible while also filling the role of a puck-moving defenseman. The $6.6-million deal for Bouwmeester was steep, but a little under market value for the consistent operator (if Dion Phaneuf's deal is taken into account). Bouwmeester should bolster the rest of the blueline (look for Dion Phaneuf to flourish while not being the centre of attention), while also contributing to offsetting the team's loss of goal-scorers. Miikka Kiprusoff could also have a greatly improved season, as he will undoubtedly have more help this year from the defence as well as a coach who is less likely to ride him all year like Keenan or smear him in the local papers. You can expect certain Flames to be better this season, namely Jarome Iginla, Daymond Langkow and Phaneuf. For a team that was tied for sixth last season in total goals with 251, look for the Flames to fall out of the top 10 in that category while moving into the top 10 in goals against (they were 23rd last season) with a stronger blueline and better coaching. For better or worse, this Flames core will continue together: Iginla, Langkow, Phaneuf, Robyn Regehr, Bouwmeester and Kipsusoff. Langkow is the obvious weak link, but the Flames are short on apt centers in their prime. Sutter is staying commited to his formula of building around this formidible core, and the GM should be rewarded with a northwest division title by a comfortable margin. A number 1 seed in the western conference isn't out of the question, seeing as how the Red Wings are only getting older and San Jose just doesn't look as dangerous after yet another early playoff exit.

Bertuzzi moving on
Bertuzzi: Reports out of Calgary are saying that Bertuzzi hasn't received a call from the Calgary Flames in three months. Bertuzzi said he accepts the fact that he probably doesn't fit in the Flames plans. Bertuzzi did confirm that he had received offers from three other teams.
Jmess: Bertuzzi is a solid third line player and can be a bargain if he signs around $1 million. However he hasn't had a season where he has played more the 75 games in quite sometime.

Zherdev done in New York
Zherdev: Reports out of New York are saying that Zherdev has turned down a $3.25 million offer from the Rangers basically sealing the end to his Rangers tenure. Zherdev is looking for $4.5 million a year and it looks like he will have to find that contract on the open market as he hits free agency.
Jmess: I'm sure some team won't be able to resist Zherdev's offensive abilities. For some reason my gut is telling me Minnesota and Edmonton could be teams that might take a good look at him.

Top suitors for Prospal
Prospal: Now that Vaclav Prospal is a free agent the reported top two teams going after him are the Minnesota Wild and the Nashville Predators.
Jmess: No way Prospal gets overpaid by any team in the league. Wiggle room for any team is hard to find so Prospal will need to take a pay cut.

Lightning GM comes clean
Lightning: Tampa Bey Lightning GM Brian Lawton admitted that the buyout of Vaclav Prospal was an effort to clear up cap space to sign a to six forward, according to reports out of Tampa.

Flames: Reports out of Calgary are saying the Flames trading Wayne Primeau away has freed up just about $1 million in cap space. With rumours suggesting the Flames interest in Tanguay, this move could be a set up for another signing.
Jmess: After the cap problems Calgary ran into at the end of last season, for example only being able to dress 15 players for several games, they might want to have a little room going into this season.

Prospal: Reports from Tampa Bay suggest the Lightning are buying out forward Vaclav Prospal at total cost of $7 million over six seasons. Prospal signed a $14 million- four year extension with the bolts before last season.

Sutter says Flames will sign Boyd
Boyd: Reports out of Calgary say that Sutter has come out and said he will get a deal done with Dustin Boyd.

Brewer: Reports out of St. Louis are saying defenseman Eric Brewer may not be ready for the beginning of the 09-10 season following his back surgery.

Tollefson being added to already deep Flyers defence
Tollefson: Ole-Kristian Tollefson who spent last year with Columbus was reportedly in Philedelphia for a physical with the Flyers. It is reported if he passes the physical he will be signed by the team.

Red Wings: Reports out of Detroit are saying the Red Wings are looking to fill a spot on their wings after losing Hossa, Samuelsson and Hudler. Some reported players the Wings are looking at are Todd Bertuzzi and Jason Williams. With only $1.6 million in cap space whoever they sign will have to be happy with $1 million salary or less.

Sens reject Sharks offer?
Heatly: Reports out of Ottawa suggest that the Senators have turned down a trade offer from the Sharks for Heatly, that would have seen Sharks' defenseman Christian Erhoff and winger Johnathan Cheechoo go to the Canadian capital.
Jmess: Ottawa is going to sit on the Edmonton offer since it is clearly the best one until Heatly definitively says if he is going to take a trade to Edmonton or not.

Zherdev not going to get paid by Rangers
Zherdev: Even more reports out of New York are saying that the Rangers will walk away from a salary awarded through arbitration. It is reported Zherdev could be awarded in the range of $4.5 million while the Rangers only want to pay $3.25 million.

With nearly the entire roster coming up for free agency, you knew the Montreal Canadiens were going to be a different looking squad come the beginning of the 2009-10 season. We all held our collective breath for the Vincent Lecavalier deal that never came and was ultimately put to bed when GM Bob Gainey sent out forward Chris Higgins, defenseman Doug Janik, high end prospect Ryan McDouagh and Russian Pavel Valentanko for big money centre Scott Gomez (and winger Tom Pyatt). The trade wasn't quite the bloc
kbuster most expected, but it did give the Habs a new centre going forward with the looming free agent exodus. Gainey let almost all of his unrestrictred free agents go, most of whom were handed modest raises (Alex Kovalev, Mike Komisarek, Tom Kostopoulos) or took pay cuts (Saku Koivu) from other teams while others are still floating around in the free agent pool (Alex Tanguay, Robert Lang). What you can take from that was that the GM could've easily retained these guys should he wanted to. Instead, he elected to change the culture of the club, first with the Gomez trade and then by throwing around the big bucks on July 1.
What the Habs look like now is a team with plenty of potential to score goals (see Mike Cammalleri, Brian Gionta) and make noise offensively. What the teams front three of Gomez, Gionta and Cammalleri lack in size, they make up for in potential (at least if they can match their previous stat sheet accolades). Secondary scoring should come in the form of Tomas Plekanec, and the brothers Kostitsyn (Andrei and Sergei) - all of which should rebound after poor campaigns. Rough and tumble types Maxim Lapierre and Travis Moen add a sandpaper component to the mix while homegrown Montreal boy Georges Laraque can throw the fists as good or better than any other heavyweight in the league - though few choose to oblige him.
The defense has a new look, but the production should at worst be similar to last season and at best be moderately improved. Jaroslav Spacek is a decent powerplay quarterback coming off a season where he led Sabres defesemen in points with 45. Hal Gill and Paul Mara are big bodies for the blueline, both of whom possess moderate offensive ability (Mara moreso) who could chip in. These additions were brought in to replace Komisarek and Francis Boullion, and Gainey could do a lot worse. Andrei Markov and Roman Hamrlik return to lead the blueline corps, as does developing d-men Ryan O'Byrne and Josh Gorges.
In between the pipes Carey Price is still the man even though he hasn't looked good since the 2007-08 regular season - and those short-lived red ju-jube pads from last season didn't help! It looks as though Gainey will ride the Price train until it gets him fired, but its hard to blame him with Price's obvious ability and his full trophy case (see: gold medal, Calder Cup). Jaroslav Halak returns in the backup role, and unless Price struggles (he can't be as bad as last year), he will be dealt early in the season because: A. They signed Curtis Sanford, who's shown he can be a competent backup, B. He has salary arbitration rights at the end of the season (both he and Price are RFA's at the end of the season but only Halak has those rights).
Ultimately, it will be a question of chemistry and how this group plays as a unit on the ice. How fast the team gels will determine where it finishes, if they bond immediately, the team will get out to a fast start and a fourth or fifth place finish (behind Pittsburgh, Washington, Boston, Philadelphia) isn't out of the question, whereas if they come out sluggish and have to develop said chemistry, they could end up the 8th seed again. I do believe the Canadiens will make the playoffs again this season, but I think it's hard to pick where. For interest's sake, I'm going to say they finish sixth just a hair above the 7th and 8th place teams in another race that goes until games 81 and 82.
What the team has in potential on paper, it makes up for in uncertainty. If you are a Habs fan, it's an exhilerating time - 90% excited and 10% scared!

Hudler heading to arbitration
Hudler: According to reports out of Detroit Hudler is not going to accept a contract from the Red Wings until his arbitration hearing. Hudler has received a two-year $10 million dollar from Dynamo of the KHL. Red Wings GM Ken Holland says he fully expects Hudler to play in Russia next year. This arbitration hearing will determine what Hudler will make if he does return to the Red Wings.
Jmess: There is also the possibility of trying to trade Hudler before arbitration and trying to let another team try to give him a huge contract to keep him in North America. The KHL hasn't registered Hudler's Dynamo contract yet so there would still be time to trade him and let another team have a shot at him.

Tampa intersted in Tanguay and Sykora
Tanguay: Reports out of Tampa are saying that the Lightning are interested in both Alex Tanguay and Petr Sykora. However the Lightning are being very careful as they do not want to overpay for either one of them.
Jmess: The Lightning are a hard team to call this off-season. I think it would be best for them to stay with youth and leave cap space open so they can keep rebuilding. Stamkos should be a good producer for them this year and a healthy Vinny can't hurt. I like the direction they're going right now and the last thing they need to do is show glimpses of their off-season game plan from last year.

Roenick retiring?
Roenick: Reports are indicating that JR has made a decision on his playing future and those reports are saying he is likely to retire. Roenick however is not ready to make a formal announcement.
Jmess: Roenick showed the hockey world over the last couple of seasons that he still had some gas in the tank, and I definitely know I'm not the only one that respected that. He was a very talented player and probably the most entertaining player off the ice. It was always great to see Roenick's press scrums and interviews. I'm going to miss him both on and off the ice, if he does decide to leave the game.

Tanguay a Flame again
Tanguay: I have just caught word of some reports out of Calgary that are saying a Flames announcement saying they have signed free agent forward Alex Tanguay is imminent. Reports say Flames GM Darryl Sutter is actively working the phones to clear up cap space to fit in the winger, however the Flames are allowed to go 10 per cent over the cap while trying to make that move.
Jmess: It looks like the Flames ran out of options and decided to bring back a guy that gave them solid production. The Flames are in desperate need of a good play maker and Tanguay can fill that role. If he gets a second stint with the Flames it will be interesting to see what his role will be.

Sykora not returning to Pittsburgh
Sykora: Reports out of Pittsburgh are saying that it looks like Petr Sykora is not going to be returning to Pittsburgh next season. Three weeks into free agency Sykora hasn't signed with anyone and it looks like he's ready to move on. Reports out of Europe suggested tension between him and coach Dan Bylsma lead to the decision.

San Jose #1 contenders for Heatly
Heatly: Reports out of San Jose and various other league sources are saying that San Jose are now the team leading the Heatly sweepstakes. Rumblings are now saying with the Sanford signing in Montreal there could be a three-way trade including Ottawa, Montreal and San Jose. That trade would see San Jose get Halak and Heatly, Montreal get Marleau, and Ottawa receive prospects and draft picks from both Ottawa and San Jose.
Jmess: San Jose may be leading the Heatly sweepstakes right now but I doubt a three way trade is in the mix. I think if it is going to happen Ottawa would want to be the ones getting Marleau and not passing him to a team in their division.

Kovalchuk contrat negotiations
Kovalchuk: Reports out of Atlanta are saying that the Thrashers are going to turn things up in contract negotiations with Kovalchuk this week. The Thrashers do not want any chance of Kovalchuk hitting the free agency market next July.
Jmess: I don't see any chance of Kovalchuk signing with the Thrashers this summer. I think him resigning will all hinge on how well him and Antropov play together, and the Thrashers record. If the Thrashers make the playoffs or are very close to it then I think he will re-sign but if they are in the basement again I think he'll be walking out the door. It's clear Kovalchuk is ready to win and if he feels like he won't get that chance with the Thrashers he'll be gone.

Blackhawks cap situation going forward

Like a kid overdoing it in a candy store, the Blackhawks may have post-spending bellyaches. With the current PR disaster of firing a seemingly-competent former general manager in Dale Tallon, the Hawks trip to the conference finals is little more than a distant memory after recent recollections of front office blunders and free agent overspending..
Going into this season (as of July 20) the Hawks have roughly $61-million commited to the 25 players on their 2009-10 roster. This is well over the current salary cap of $56.7-million and must be figured out immediately. It's an easy enough fix for them, just trade out some salary or get creative burying contracts in the AHL.
What's really concerning is the salary cap situation going into 2010-11. What most people already know is that the team's two best forwards and best defenceman are coming up for restricted free agent status - Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith. That's a lot of money they're going to need to shore up.
What some people aren't aware of is that the Hawks already have over $43-million commited to just 13(!) players for next season. Those 13 players DON'T include: John Madden, Andrew Ladd, Ben Eager, Adam Burish, Colin Fraser, Niklas Hjarmlsson and the afforementioned three cornerstones. With the cap taking a nosedive next season - regardless of the current recession since cap numbers are set by the previous season - the recent hockey renaissance in the Windy City could be blowing out of town alot sooner than expected.
Nevermind that the Hawks have talent still getting cranked out of their Rockford affiliate of the AHL, but the raises to the Hawks big three could be enough for the franchise to be looking for a bailout.
Captain Jonathan Toews, just 21 years old, looks to get the biggest raise from his $2.8-million entry level deal. He turned up his goal production from 24 goals in his rookie season to 34 goals last season defusing any thought of a sophmore slump for the kid from Winnipeg. He also managed to play in all 82 games while maintaining a respectable +12 rating. In terms of numbers, two players come to mind: Paul Stastny and Ryan Getzlaf. While both have better offensive numbers, both are of similar age and importance to their western conference clubs. Neither are captain for their team. Their cap hits are $6.6-million for Stastny and $5.325 for Getzlaf- Toews looks to make somewhere in the middle around $6-million over 5 years.
Sparkplug Patrick Kane's small stature hasn't been the bane to his NHL existence pundits said it would be when this kid went first overall three drafts ago. "Kaner" has missed just two games in the last two seasons while putting up a 71 and 70 point years. At just 20, Kane looks to continue to improve for at least two more years before leveling off. The durible winger looks to make around what Corey Perry of the Ducks makes - $5.325-million if he takes a very charitible hometown discount. Look for deal closer to 5.75 over a 6 or 7 year term.
Defenseman Duncan Keith, who continues his steady improvement, had a great 44 point season while posting a +33 rating and played in the all-star game in Montreal. His great peroformance carried into the post season where he not only further proved himself the best defenseman on the team but did well to improve the size of the contract extension they (or someone else) will sign him to. While his numbers look similar to Johnny Oduya and Tom Gilbert's - who make $3-million and $4-million per year respectively - Keith is the only of the Chicago three who is eligible for salary arbitration which is a great help for players to get the upper limit of what they should be paid. I highly doubt the Hawks will let it get to that but you can bet Duncan and his agent have that in hand and mind to get the dollar figure they want. Look for Keith to snag a $5.25-million dollar deal over 5 years, which is a steal.
So if you think about it, the hawks will need to spend somewhere in the neighbourhood of between $14-million and $18-million to rein in their captain, star winger and shutdown defenceman. It's a tall order, made worse by the uber-long terms given to Brain Campbell and Marian Hossa and the RFA blunders that resulted in premature (though surprisingly economical) deals for Kris Versteeg and Cam Barker.
It's not beyond the realm of possiblity that new GM Stan Bowman can't work it out, but this is his first GM job and the environment in the Chicago front office sounds north of a little hostile if Martin Havlat is to be believed.
The Chicago management team better decide right quick who's steering this boat or its going to sink real quick.

NHL Rumor Stop (NRS) will be adding a new columnist this week. Look for his columns as he looks into the Chicago Blackhawks cap situation, and gives an analysis into the new look Habs. Richards: Reports indicates Dallas Stars owner Tom Hicks is in some financial trouble and may look to cut team payroll. There is now speculation that Brad Richards $7.8 million a year contract could be on the move as a result. It has been hinted that the Rangers may be interested in Richards.
Jmess: If the Stars are in financial troubles cutting Richards huge contract only makes sense. Just don't know if anyone is willing to take on his massive contract as his production hasn't matched his pay as of late. Afinogenov can't find work
Afinogenov: Reports are indicating that Max Afinogenov is having a hard time finding work both in the NHL and KHL. Everyone seems to be puzzled as to just what contracts he's going over and how he's going about his negotiations.
Jmess: If I had to guess why he hasn't signed in the NHL or KHL it would be because he's asking for a ridiculous amount of money. Yes Afinogenov could of demanded a lot of money if he was a free agent last off-season, but his 08/09 season completely ruined his value. Mired in injuries and disputes with the Buffalo coaching staff he developed a bad reputation for himself. This guy does have a ton of skill and I'm sure a team would take a risk on him, but they're not going to pay millions just to take a risk on a guy.

Adam Foote to finish season with different team?
Foote: It sounds like the Avalanche are going to look to get rid of Foote this season, reports out of Denver suggest. Given the fact that Foote's performance has been suffering and he is reaching the end of his career. The Avs might wait until the trade deadline in order to get as much as they can for Foote.
Jmess: It does look as though Colorado needs to start rebuilding their back end, and getting rid of Foote is a good idea. However I do agree that he most likely will not be traded until the deadline, as teams will at most only want to pay 1/3 of his $3 million contract.

Sharp on the move
Sharp: It looks like Chicago's Patrick Sharp will be on the move and it could be soon according to reports out of Chicaho. Chicago is looking to move the sniper in look ahead efforts to next July, as they need to clear space to re-sign Johnathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith.

Tanguay becoming a Panther?
Tanguay: Reports out of Miami are saying that the Florida Panthers have made an offer to Alex Tanguay. However it is confirmed that other teams also have bids in for his services.
Jmess: After losing Bouwmeester the Panthers have to do something to interest fans. Although Tanguay hasn't been as exciting to watch since he's left Colorado, but at least he's a name and he's a solid 70 point guy if he stays healthy.

Heatly: Reports out of Ottawa are saying that Heatly's teammate Daniel Alfredsson has been trying to get a hold of Heatly, to see what problems were raised between Heatly and Senator's coach Cory Clouston. So far Alfredsson has been unsuccessful in his attempts.

Robert Lang going to the KHL or not?
Lang: Reports earlier in the day said that Robert Lang had signed a contract with a KHL team, but now the reports are going unconfirmed. With all these rumors and the fact that Lang still hasn't signed with a NHL club it looks like it is very likely he could be playing overseas.
Jmess: Lang going overseas wouldn't surprise me. The KHL is really starting to grab some good talent, hopefully the NHL doesn't start losing some really big European names.

Heatly: Reports out of Ottawa say that Edmonton is still the only viable option for Heatly to be traded to. However it is speculated that Edmonton's patience is wearing thing on the Heatly saga. News out of Columbus has denied that the Blue Jackets are in on Heatly. Minnesota is rumored to be interested in Heatly but Ottawa wants Brent Burns and Minnesota will not part with him.
Jmess: It is getting to the point where I just want this whole thing to be over with. He either is going to Edmonton or staying in Ottawa in my opinion, unless another team really decides to step up. Heatly just has to decide which city he hates more Edmonton or Ottawa.

Johnson: Reports out of L.A. are now suggesting that Johnson is about to sign a two year deal with the Kings.

Versteeg free agent?
Versteeg: It looks like the Blackhawks qualifying offer blunder may cost them Versteeg. The NHLPA has filed a grievance with the league over the qualifying offer debacle. If Versteeg were to leave via unrestricted free agency it is speculated he could make up to $5 million on the open market.

Sakic: Reports out of Denver are suggesting that Sakic may announce his retirement on Thursday.
Jmess: This is a shame if it actually happens. We would see one of the best talents and great guy leave this game. He has been one of the best faces of hockey and if he left it would disappoint a lot of hockey fans. I was really hoping to see Sakic lead the Olympic team in Canada as well.

Tanguay not returning to Colorado
Tanguay: Reports out of Denver are saying that Alex Tanguay is not making a return to the Avalanche via free agency this off-season.
Jmess: It's clear Tanguay is taking his time in assessing where he wants to go. Colorado may have been a good fit for him with Smyth gone and the fact he had his best years there. It will be interesting to see where he lands.

Jack Johnson out of LA?
Johnson: It looks like the Kings aren't willing to use any of the $10 million in cap space they have to re-sign restricted agent Jack Johnson. The Kings still haven't inked the young future star blueliner and he didn't file for arbitration maybe in efforts to leave the team via free agency or in efforts to get a long-term deal. Right now it is apparent the kings and Johnson aren't on the same page and he could be dealt very soon.

Morris: Reports suggest that the Boston Bruins have showed interest in signing defenceman Derek Morris.
Jmess: Just wondering if Boston has the cap room. I would expect that the Kessel situation would have to be sorted out before the Bruins make a free agent splash.

Nash and Columbus far apart
Nash: Reports out of Columbus suggest Rick Nash and the Blue Jackets are far apart on what they think Nash deserves for a contract extension.

Roloson: A radio station in Edmonton is reporting the Oilers have made a very strong 1-year offer to Roloson.

Bouwmeester: The Calgary Sun talked to Bouwmeester's agent and he made it clear that a contract worth $6.3 million a season was never offered.

Sedin's moving on
Sedin's: TSN's Darren Dreger is reporting that Gillis and the Sedin's still haven't worked out a deal and he wouldn't be suprised if the Sedin's left. Dreger believes the twins could command $7 million each on the open market. Rumors suggest the Habs and Maple Leafs are going to be players for the twins.

Knuble: Reports out of Pittsburgh suggest the Penguins could go after Knuble if they are unable to re-sign Fedetenko or Bil Geurin.

Hossa: Reports out of Detroit are saying contract negotiations between Marian Hossa and the Red Wings have broken down. It is now being suggested the Wings might try to move his rights. One extra piece of Red Wings news is that the Wings will not be resigning Ty Conklin.

Kaberle trade
Kaberle: Just caught word that the offer on the table for Kaberle may be from the Flyers and includes Lupul and either Giroux or Van Riemsdyke and a draft pick. Just a rumor though thought it was interesting enough to share.

Camalleri's rights on the move
Camalleri: It looks like Calgary isn't going to get Camalleri signed so it looks like his rights could be on the move this weekend. Apparently Ottawa is very interested in acquiring his rights. Buffalo and Nashville could also be players for Camalleri.
Jmess: I wouldn't be surprised at all if we saw Camalleri in a Senators jersey next season as it seems like there is interest from both sides.

Lecavalier: News out of Montreal says there is a real buzz around the Bell Centre and the Canadiens organization. Hossa staying in Detroit?
Hossa: I just caught word that Hossa may have already signed a contract with Detroit and the Red Wings are just waiting to announce that the deal is done.

What has to take place for Lecavalier to go to Montreal
Jmess: This is the steps that would have to happen for Lecavalier to go to Montreal. First and foremost Hedman would have to be taken as #1 in the draft; this will prevent Tampa from getting the stud defenseman they desperately need. Why does Hedman have to go first for Montreal to get Lecavalier? Markov is the only asset Montreal has that the Lightning want but the Lightning will no longer want Markov if they get Hedman, they won't want to have to pay for two number one d-men down the road. So for Montreal to get Lecavalier they need Hedman to get picked first and be willing to give up Markov. I wouldn't doubt the Canadiens would be willing to part with Markov, the Canadiens will want to make a big splash since the draft in their building, and I'm sure the new owner's the Molson family would like to show the fans the team is going in a new better direction.

Heatly's preferred teams?
Heatly: Although Heatly has not released the list of preferred teams he'd like to go to, rumored speculation among NHL agents and GM's say three of those teams are Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. However Bryan Murray has eluded to the fact that he thinks Heatly's contract is almost untradable which may force Heatly to go to a team that isn't on his list or stay in Ottawa.
Jmess: If Heatly's main priority is to get out of Ottawa then whatever team it is shouldn't really matter. He should know that his contract limits him to going to teams with cap space and teams with cap space aren't usually the ones that are perennial contenders or close to home.

Marleau for Heatly?
Heatly: I just caught word of a possible trade being in the works that would include the Senator's Dany Heatly and the Shark's Patrick Marleau. The Sharks have been looking for a prolific scoring winger to play with Thornton and to shake up their dressing room.
Jmess: If the Senator's could get a quality player like Marleau given the situation Heatly has put them in then I'm sure they would be very interested in taking it. It sounds like a win-win for each team but may be too good to be true.

Cole on the outs?
Cole: It appears as though Erik Cole is going to be the odd man out in Carolina this year. Cole had a disappointing season and an even more disappointing playoffs. Carolina has a number of unrestricted and restricted free agents and it doesn't appear as though Cole is a priority.
Jmess: I am pretty much ready just to go out and say Cole won't be with the Hurricanes next year. He also is in line for a pay cut since he just hasn't been the same player since his neck injury. Some one will pick him up just to early to really know who is interested, I can probably guess that the Oilers aren't.

Minnesota and L.A. in Heatly hunt?
Heatly: I just heard a rumor that Minnesota and L.A. are now players for Dany Heatly.

Nash Columbus' off-season priority
Nash: The rumor is the Columbus Blue Jackets have made signing Rick Nash to a contract extension their main off-season priority. If Nash isn't signed he could play out the final year of his contract and test the market.
Jmess view: I think Nash will be in Columbus for a long time, as Columbus has shown vast improvements over the last couple of seasons. Also if Columbus wants to save some cap room they'll sign him to 10 or 11 year deal.

Draft day craziness
Draft day: Reports from all over suggest that this year's draft day will see several big moves. It is thought that both Heatly and Lecavalier will be on the move and possibly in the same deal? Also LA's Jack Johnson is rumored to also be moving to a different team. Of course you can't ignore Brian Burke and his attempt to move the Leafs into one of the first two picks of the draft.
Jmess view: It will be a great draft day that is for sure. Not only will a pure goal scorer with amazing skill be drafted into the league (John Tavares) but we could see some of the biggest draft day trades in recent memory.

Briere: Reports out of Montreal suggest that the Canadiens have turned down the opportunity to acquire Briere from the Philadelphia Flyers.

Carbonneau: A rumor got to me yesterday about Guy Carbonneau reportedly being seen at the Calgary international airport. Not sure if this visit would be hockey related or not, but still interesting.

Kessel heading out of Boston?
Kessel: Reports out of Boston suggest that with the David Krejci signing the Bruins may not have the cap space to give Kessel the raise he'll undoubtedly be looking for. The rumor is Kessel may be on the move or another Boston forward such as Chuck Kobasew, Michael Ryder or Patrice Bergeron would have to be moved to make space for Kessel.

Tippett: A recent report out of Calgary suggests that recently fired Dallas Stars coach Dave Tippett would be a good fit in Calgary's coaching vacancy.

Start of rumor madness
It's that time of year again the NHL season is over and crazed hockey fans need some sort of hockey news to keep them going. This blog is going to stray away from giving you the boring NHL news of the offseason such as team analysis and talking about the draft prospects that have already been talked about day in and day out. This blog is going to provide you with nothing but rumors in a quick hit format. Those who know me know that I am obsessed with NHL rumors and spend a lot of my time following them and finding them. I will be providing rumors on this blog that I find or hear on a day to day basis. All I'll be doing is blogging what I heard and that is it.
